Your train and station checklist

The beauty of taking trains in Europe is that it is incredibly simple! With most rail operators, no check in is required and there is no need for a baggage drop. Instead you can arrive at the station and hop on and off the train in a matter of minutes. Long queues or waiting times aren’t necessary!

Just follow the checklist below and you will be completely prepared for you trip.

Make sure you have your  ticket on you (or saved on your phone). If you need to print your tickets at the station,  click here to find out the necessary steps and instructions. If you have a printed E-ticket, you do not need to print anything at the station.

Make sure that you have a piece of ID such as a passport, with you. The ticket inspector may ask to check your ID if you have an E-ticket or it may mandatory (check your confirmation email to be sure).

Make sure your ticket is validated if you have had to print it at the station. Find out how to do this here. E-tickets do not have to be validated.

Be at the station at least 20 minutes prior to departure. This will give you enough time to find your platform and walk to your carriage. If you are taking a Eurostar train, you have to check-in at least 30 minutes before departure.

Do not panic if your departure platform is not displayed. Usually, the platform numbers are only displayed between 10 to 20 minutes before departure. If you cannot see your stop displayed on the departures board, then also do not panic. This is very common, as only large and/or terminus stations are displayed. So instead just look for your train number (displayed on your ticket) on the departures board.

Train doors will close exactly two minutes before departure, so if you are running late, this is your absolute deadline.

If you need to transfer and change trains at a station, make sure you are listening carefully to the announcements so you do not miss your stop. Once you are at your transfer station, make sure you look out for the departures board, if you do not know the platform number. Your platform will be displayed between 10 - 20 minutes before departure, so do not worry if it is not displayed instantly.

Lastly, have fun, bring some snacks and enjoy the scenery! Trains are meant to be fun!
